Airbus SE is reportedly in discussions with Mexico's Viva Aerobus SAB for a significant narrowbody aircraft order as the low-cost carrier seeks to expand its fleet. According to people who are familiar with the ongoing talks, the companies are still deliberating and may finalise an agreement at the Paris Air Show that begins on Monday, 21 June. However, despite these deliberations, there is still a chance that no agreement may be reached this week.
At present, Viva Aerobus operates a fleet of 70 Airbus planes, including various A320 and A321 models. The carrier reports that it has one of the youngest and most advanced aircraft fleets in North America. Nevertheless, to facilitate growth, the carrier needs additional aircraft.
Earlier this year, Viva Aerobus was Mexico's fourth-largest domestic airline by passenger numbers, carrying 9.1 million domestic travellers. However, the carrier has recently overtaken legacy airline Grupo Aeromexico SAB to become the country's third-largest domestic carrier by passenger numbers.
The Paris Air Show is the city's first significant event since the COVID-19 pandemic, and Airbus is actively engaged in securing some important orders during the show. Reports also indicate that Airbus may conclude deals with India's IndiGo, as well as Saudi carrier Flynas. However, the plans with Viva Aerobus appear to be advancing and could result in a substantial order of numerous narrow-body aircraft for the Mexican carrier. Neither airline has released a statement regarding the ongoing discussions at this time.
