Inflation in Europe has slowed to its lowest rate in over a year, but policymakers are facing difficulties as signs of underlying price pressures persist. The European Union's statistics agency reported that prices in the 20 countries using the euro rose by 6.9% compared to last year, a significant decrease from February's 8.5% and the lowest inflation rate since February 2022, when energy prices surged due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. However, the report also shows a rise in food, alcohol, and tobacco prices by 15.4%, and service prices by 5%, highlighting the persistent upward pressure on prices.

Moreover, core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, reached a new record high of 5.7%, which may pose a challenge for the European Central Bank in its efforts to balance the need to control inflation with supporting the economy. These difficulties are compounded by the recent banking sector turmoil and emerging efforts by banks to conserve cash following the failures of Silicon Valley Bank and Credit Suisse, which could make loans more expensive. The stubbornly high core inflation rate may make it harder for policymakers to assess if they have done enough to curb inflation.
