Volkswagen's combustion-engine Golf model is likely to be discontinued with the shift in markets towards electric vehicles, according to the brand's chief, Thomas Schaefer. The eighth generation of the compact car will receive an upgrade next year to maintain its appeal to customers, but Schaefer does not anticipate launching a new vehicle unless there are unforeseen changes in the market.
The Golf has been a top-selling car for Volkswagen since its launch in 1974, but demand for hatchbacks has fallen as consumers increasingly prefer more spacious SUVs. Volkswagen introduced an all-electric sibling, the ID.3, three years ago, and Schaefer suggested the possibility of an electric Golf with new technology, as early as 2028, if it offered unique features compared to the ID.3.
