The French government has announced an increased police presence in Paris and other major cities, urging for calm after protests broke out following the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old delivery driver during a police check. The incident has sparked nationwide concern, with French President Emmanuel Macron describing the young man's death as "inexplicable and inexcusable."

Unrest and tensions have escalated in various towns around Paris, particularly in the suburb of Nanterre where the incident took place. Lawyers reported that the teenager, identified as Nael M., was shot during a routine traffic stop. The police officer involved in the shooting has been detained and may face manslaughter charges, according to the Nanterre prosecutor's office.

The neighborhood in Nanterre where Nael lived remains tense, with a heavy police presence near the regional administration building. Evidence of the unrest can be seen in burned car wrecks and overturned bins. Bouquets of orange and yellow roses have been tied to a post near where the car crashed after the shooting, serving as a memorial.

Videos that surfaced and were purportedly of the incident have shocked viewers with their graphic content. Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin has promised a thorough investigation into the incident. The footage depicts two police officers leaning into the driver-side window of a yellow car, which then speeds away as one officer fires into the vehicle. The car is later found crashed into a nearby post.

In response to the protests and the shooting, President Macron has called for calm and respect for the victim's family. He emphasized that justice should be allowed to take its course. Meanwhile, Darmanin has deployed additional police forces, with 1,200 officers deployed overnight and 2,000 expected to maintain order in the Paris region and other major cities.

France has relatively fewer incidents involving firearms compared to the United States. However, the death of this young driver has stirred anger in Nanterre and other towns, particularly in areas with high poverty rates and perceived police abuses. Many residents believe that police misconduct is not sufficiently addressed.

Lawyers representing Nael's family have demanded that the police officer be charged with murder instead of manslaughter. They have also requested that the investigation be handed over to a different region, raising concerns about impartiality in Nanterre. The police claim that their lives were endangered as the driver had allegedly threatened to run them over, but the lawyers have refuted this statement.

Public figures, such as soccer star Kylian Mbappe, have expressed shock and condolences over the incident. The French government plans to hold a security meeting to discuss necessary actions and next steps. This tragic event has once again highlighted calls for greater police accountability and concerns about racial profiling and injustice in France.
