Inflation in Peru's capital, Lima, experienced a notable slowdown in June, reflecting the cooling of the country's economy, which was even more significant than initially anticipated due to political instability. Consumer prices in Lima rose by 6.46% on a year-on-year basis, falling below the 6.92% median forecast provided by economists surveyed by Bloomberg. This marks a significant decrease from May, when annual inflation reached 7.9%.

The central bank of Peru utilizes the capital area as a representative measure of the country's overall inflation rate. According to statistics agency INEI, consumer prices in Lima fell by 0.15% on a monthly basis, contrary to the 0.2% rise that economists surveyed by Bloomberg had predicted. This is the first time in 2021 that the benchmark interest rate in Peru, currently set at 7.75%, has exceeded inflation.

The central bank has maintained its borrowing costs at a 22-year high for the past five months, following a series of significant rate hikes. Despite the recent deceleration in inflation, the bank's chief, Julio Velarde, remains cautious about cutting interest rates prematurely, fearing a potential resurgence of inflation. Velarde expects inflation to return to the central bank's target range of 1% to 3% by next year.

The notable slowdown in inflation is indicative of the economic challenges that Peru has faced due to ongoing political turmoil. The country has been grappling with political uncertainty and social unrest, which has adversely impacted economic growth. As Peru navigates through these challenging times, the central bank's decision to maintain high borrowing costs aims to curb inflationary pressures and stabilize the economy for a sustained recovery.

It remains uncertain how long the economic slowdown will persist and how it will impact the lives of Peruvians. However, the central bank's cautious approach to monetary policy, coupled with potential efforts to address political instability, could help alleviate economic challenges and create a more favorable environment for sustainable growth.
