French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire expressed optimism that Tesla Inc. may establish a factory in France following successful efforts by President Emmanuel Macron to woo Elon Musk, the billionaire CEO of the electric vehicle manufacturer. Musk has been actively searching for a suitable location for Tesla's next factory and visited France in both May and June. While it remains unclear whether the potential factory would be dedicated to vehicle manufacturing or battery production, Le Maire highlighted the various options that are being considered.
Le Maire revealed in an interview on LCI television that he and President Macron had engaged in discussions with Musk, assuring him that he is welcome in France. However, one major hurdle in the process is the lack of available industrial sites with essential rail or sea connections, as well as a "de-carbonized" supply of electricity necessary to operate a factory. Such sites are becoming increasingly scarce, expensive, and difficult to find due to the success of other regions in attracting new industrial ventures.
Despite the challenges posed by site selection, Le Maire emphasized that France has met all the necessary conditions to be the most attractive country for Tesla's investment. He stated that the country has undergone a significant economic transformation over the past seven years, which has improved France's image on the global stage. With Macron's personal involvement and Le Maire's efforts to showcase the advantages of choosing France, the hope is that Tesla will ultimately choose to establish a factory within the country's borders.
