Turkey's Parliament has made the decision to keep the foreign affairs committee on standby during its summer recess, which will allow the country to expedite the ratification process of Sweden's membership in NATO. The official announcement was made in the Official Gazette on Saturday, confirming that the committee will be available for discussions on Sweden's NATO bid if requested by the government.

Sweden's accession to NATO would have significant strategic implications, as it would solidify the alliance's control over the Baltic Sea and establish a dominant position in the Arctic region, both of which are crucial gateways for Russia. This development comes at a time when Russia is facing challenges due to its involvement in the conflict in Ukraine.

Earlier this week, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated that Turkey would support Sweden's membership once Stockholm presents a comprehensive plan to combat Kurdish separatist groups and alleged supporters of the failed 2016 coup attempt against the Turkish government. Erdogan's announcement came at the NATO summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, where he was originally scheduled to attend a ceremony commemorating the 2016 coup attempt. Instead, he will participate in a similar ceremony in Istanbul.

Turkey, along with Hungary, is the only NATO member that has yet to approve Sweden's bid for membership. The swift deliberation of Sweden's NATO application by Turkey's foreign affairs committee during the summer recess demonstrates the country's commitment to bolstering its alliance with NATO and strengthening regional security in Europe.
