The wildfire threat in Europe is intensifying and spreading to the picturesque French Riviera, while firefighters in Greece are making progress in extinguishing or containing over 100 blazes. The European Forest Fire Information System has identified a high-risk zone in southern France, which includes large portions of the coast and inland areas between Marseilles and Nice. Additionally, parts of Italy and Spain are also facing the threat of wildfires, as temperatures continue to rise on the Iberian Peninsula in the coming days.

Efforts to control the wildfires are being hampered by strong winds that are fanning the flames across the Mediterranean region, from Algeria to Turkey. This surge of wildfires is occurring during what is projected to be the hottest month on record, worldwide, with scientists attributing the extreme heat to climate change. They have emphasized that without climate change, such widespread and intense heatwaves across the Northern Hemisphere, from the United States to China, would have been "virtually impossible." The international community's efforts to reduce the use of fossil fuels have fallen short of what is required to combat the rapidly warming planet.

In Greece, more than 130 people were evacuated from the area of Nea Anchialos by coastguard vessels and private craft, as a fire in the region approached an ammunition dump near an airforce base, triggering a series of explosions. Meanwhile, the situation in Rhodes has improved, with all the blazes now under control. However, the government estimated that around 50,000 olive trees and 2,500 livestock were destroyed by the fires.

Despite a drop in temperatures, parts of six regions in Greece, including Greater Athens, remain on high wildfire alert. Interestingly, the fires in Greece are now breaking out at altitudes above 1,000 meters, which was previously uncommon. On the other hand, northern Europe is experiencing cooler weather, with temperatures in countries like Germany, France, and the Nordic countries below seasonal averages. For example, London's temperature is expected to reach a peak of 19C on Sunday, which is nearly 4C lower than the norm. This below-average temperature trend is expected to continue in many parts of Europe for the next 10 days.

As the wildfire threat spreads to new areas in Europe and the world confronts the reality of climate change, urgent action is required to address this escalating environmental crisis. The need to transition to sustainable and renewable energy sources and implement effective measures to prevent wildfires has become more crucial than ever. The mounting challenges posed by climate change serve as a stern reminder that we must prioritize the preservation of our planet and take decisive action to mitigate the devastating impacts of global warming.
