Queens Park Rangers, a football team based in West London, is actively seeking investors as it aims to capitalize on the growing demand for investment opportunities in the world's most popular sport. The team, which recently unveiled new facilities at its training center near Heathrow Airport, has been conducting tours for potential investors, according to a source familiar with the matter.
The Chief Executive Officer of QPR, Lee Hoos, confirmed that the board is open to new investment. However, Hoos emphasized that the team is looking for investors who can not only provide financial support but also contribute to the strategic decision-making process at the board level. While Hoos did not provide further details on the ongoing talks, it is clear that QPR is actively exploring opportunities to secure additional funding.
In recent years, lower league English football clubs have become attractive targets for investors, particularly from the United States. This investment trend is fueled by the desire to promote these teams to the more lucrative top-tier leagues. Many clubs in the Championship, the second tier of English football, struggle to generate profits, with player wages consistently exceeding revenues. This has prompted US investors, such as hedge fund manager Tom Wagner and a group of businessmen, to acquire stakes in clubs like Birmingham City and Swansea City, both competing in the Championship. Lower-tier clubs like Ipswich Town, Lincoln City, and Wrexham AFC have also received investments, with celebrities such as Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney becoming stakeholders in Wrexham AFC in 2021.
For Queens Park Rangers, the team last played in the Premier League during the 2014-2015 season. In the previous season, they narrowly avoided relegation to the third tier after their coach, Michael Beale, left the club unexpectedly to join Glasgow Rangers. The club's controlling shareholder is Ruben Gnanalingam, the son of the late Malaysian billionaire G. Gnanalingam. Other notable shareholders include Amit Bhatia, the son-in-law of steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, and US investor Richard Reilly.
Financially, Queens Park Rangers reported an operating loss of £24 million ($31 million) for the 2021-2022 season, with revenue amounting to £22.1 million. This was influenced by the club's decision to retain players, contributing to the overall costs. Despite the financial challenges, QPR remains hopeful that strategic investments can help drive the team's success and secure a return to the Premier League in the future.
