Stellantis NV, the parent company of Fiat, is set to introduce a new affordable electric vehicle (EV) to its lineup in order to compete with rival automakers Renault SA and Chinese carmakers. The aim is to cater to customers who are seeking more affordable options in the EV market.
The forthcoming EV, inspired by the Fiat Panda, is expected to have a price tag of less than €25,000 ($27,347). It is scheduled to be unveiled in July 2024 and will directly challenge Renault's Dacia Spring, according to Olivier Francois, CEO of the Fiat brand. He emphasized the growing demand for affordable EVs, stating that there is a real need for such vehicles in the market.
Stellantis is also planning to release a low-priced electric city car under its French brand Citroen, called the e-C3, in early 2023. This vehicle will be produced in Slovakia to minimize costs and provide a competitive offering against Renault's upcoming all-electric Renault 5 and the Dacia Spring, which is currently manufactured in China. This move is prompted by the increasing pressure to deliver affordable EVs, as mass-market consumers face budget constraints due to inflation.
In addition to its affordable EV lineup, Stellantis is targeting the US market by relaunching its popular electric 500 model. The US market is seen as the company's largest profit pool, and reintroducing the electric 500 is expected to help strengthen its position in the region.
In terms of the new electric Panda, Francois mentioned that there is a likelihood of utilizing synergies with the platform used for the Citroen e-C3. This collaboration will enable cost efficiency and optimization while delivering a competitive product to meet the demand for affordable EVs.
Overall, Stellantis' strategy to expand its affordable EV offerings indicates a recognition of the market demand for cost-effective electric vehicles. With increasing competition from Chinese carmakers and the need to cater to budget-conscious consumers, Stellantis aims to solidify its position in the EV market by offering compelling and accessible options.
