Novo Nordisk A/S has reached a new milestone as its market value has exceeded the size of Denmark's domestic economy. The Danish company's shares experienced a surge this week following the news of a heart benefit associated with its weight-loss drug, Wegovy. This boost in share prices has catapulted Novo's market capitalization to over 2.87 trillion kroner ($423 billion), surpassing Denmark's 2022 gross domestic product. As a result, Novo is now competing for the title of Europe's most valuable company.
Since 2008, Novo has been the highest-valued company in Denmark, surpassing the container-shipping giant A.P. Moller-Maersk A/S, and the gap between the two companies has continued to widen. The soaring sales of drugs aimed at treating obesity and diabetes have played a significant role in Novo's increased value. This success not only solidifies Novo's dominance in Denmark but also exerts a strong influence within the Danish business community.
Josephine Cetti, the chief strategist at Nordea Bank Abp's asset and wealth management division, highlighted the impact of Novo's success on Danish companies. Cetti explained that Novo's accomplishments have added a stamp of quality to Danish shares, which is attracting attention from investors and positively affecting other companies in the industry. The company's significant presence has prompted the Copenhagen Stock Exchange to adjust its benchmark index in 2013 since Novo had become too dominant, constituting approximately 45% of the gauge. The index is now capped to ensure that the weight of individual stocks does not exceed 20%.
While Novo's achievement is remarkable, it has yet to reach the level of dominance that Nokia Oyj once held in Finland. In 2000, when Nokia was still primarily focused on manufacturing mobile phones, it was Europe's most valuable company. At that time, Nokia's market capitalization was twice the size of Finland's economy, accounting for roughly 4% of the country's GDP.
Novo's success has also had a positive influence on other Danish pharmaceutical companies. The company's achievements have helped these companies gain better access to funding and have raised the overall quality of Danish businesses. While Novo still has a way to go to reach the level of dominance Nokia once held, its current market value and influence in Denmark firmly establish it as a significant player in the European market.
