Vietnamese automaker VinFast Auto Ltd. experienced a remarkable debut on the Nasdaq Global Select Market, with its shares doubling in value to $20.88 in a volatile first day of trading. VinFast, backed by Vietnam's wealthiest individual, completed a merger with Black Spade Acquisition Co., a blank-check company, valuing the electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer at $23 billion. The listing on the Nasdaq platform brings VinFast into direct competition with established car manufacturers such as Tesla, Lucid Group, and Rivian Automotive. Moreover, going public will open up opportunities for VinFast to raise additional capital as it seeks expansion in the United States.

VinFast's recent entry onto the Nasdaq marks the culmination of its long-standing goal to become a publicly traded company. The company aims to replicate the success of its global counterparts, and the IPO provides the necessary platform to achieve this. VinFast's listing is not only a major milestone for the automaker but also for Vietnam, as it is one of the few Vietnamese firms to be listed in the US market.

Despite the optimistic start, VinFast has faced challenges, particularly in the US market. In May, the company recalled all its electric sport utility vehicles due to a software defect. This setback, along with the ongoing losses associated with scaling up vehicle production, may impact the company's performance in the short term.

The ambitious plans of VinFast include the construction of a new factory in North Carolina, which broke ground just last month. The facility is expected to have an initial capacity of 150,000 vehicles per year, with production slated to commence in 2025. VinFast aims to be a major player in the growing EV market, capitalizing on the increasing demand for sustainable transportation options.

As with any merger involving EV manufacturers and blank-check companies, there are inherent risks and uncertainties. However, VinFast remains confident about its equity appraisal for the SPAC listing and sees potential for further upside in its valuation. This positive outlook underscores the company's determination to establish itself as a prominent player in the EV industry and its commitment to delivering cutting-edge electric vehicles to the global market.
