German automaker Mercedes-Benz has recently unveiled the highly anticipated second generation of its flagship sports car, the 2024 AMG GT coupe. The new model, which was showcased in Carmel, California, comes in two distinct variants: the powerful AMG GT 63 and the slightly less potent AMG GT 55. With its impressive specs, the brawnier GT 63 can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.1 seconds, boasting a top speed of 196 mph. On the other hand, the GT 55 achieves the same acceleration in 3.8 seconds, with a top speed of 183 mph.
While pricing details have not been revealed yet, the previous generation AMG GT had a starting price of approximately $120,000. This new coupe is a successor to the highly popular AMG GT line, which included variants like the AMG GT R and garnered immense excitement among automotive enthusiasts. The 2024 AMG GT utilizes an updated version of the same 4.0-liter V-8 engine that powered its predecessors, which is also found in the Mercedes-AMG SL reintroduced by the company last year.
One of the major highlights of the new model is the optional 2+2 seating design, which allows for two extra passengers, albeit ones of smaller stature as Mercedes recommends they be "less than 5 feet tall." The car also showcases new advancements, including AMG-performance all-wheel drive and a retractable rear spoiler integrated into the trunk lid. At speeds exceeding 50 mph, the spoiler can automatically adjust to five different angles, optimizing handling and minimizing drag. Additionally, the AMG GT comes equipped with a new ride control suspension featuring roll stabilization and rear-axle steering as standard.
While the exact weight of the car has not been disclosed, the inclusion of additional seats, all-wheel drive, rear-wheel steering, and a nine-speed transmission is likely to make the 2024 AMG GT slightly heavier than its predecessor, which weighed approximately 3,600 pounds.
The introduction of the AMG GT comes at a time when Mercedes-Benz has been experiencing great success. After announcing its shift towards catering to wealthier clients by eliminating some entry-level models, the brand has been seeing positive results. Bloomberg Intelligence analysis indicates that the average selling price of a Mercedes has increased by around 40% since 2019.
Set to be delivered in the first half of 2024, the AMG GT will directly compete with popular sports cars like the Porsche 911 Turbo. Priced at $197,200, the Porsche 911 Turbo boasts similar horsepower, with 572hp, and achieves an astonishing 0 to 60 mph acceleration in just 2.7 seconds.
With its impressive performance capabilities and luxurious features, the 2024 AMG GT is poised to captivate automotive enthusiasts and continue Mercedes-Benz's tradition of delivering top-of-the-line sports cars.
