According to a statement by the Israeli army, rockets were fired from Syria towards the Israeli-held area of the Golan Heights, with one landing in an open area and two others failing to cross the border. This marks the first time in the current round of violence that rockets have been launched from Syria, and comes just two days after Israel repelled the biggest barrage from Lebanon since 2006.
The ongoing Jewish Passover holiday, Easter, and the holy Muslim month of Ramadan have contributed to tensions. Rockets have also been fired at Israel from Gaza, prompting Israeli air force strikes on targets such as weapon manufacturing sites used by the Hamas militant group. Southern Lebanon was also targeted.
Recent confrontations at the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem sparked the fighting, which has included a shooting attack by Palestinians that killed two young Israeli women in the West Bank, a car ramming incident that killed an Italian tourist, and a clash with Israeli soldiers in which one Palestinian was killed.
