Google has taken action to remove numerous negative reviews for a tracker developed by the Human Rights Foundation that identifies apparel brands using forced Uyghur labor. The Uyghur Forced Labor Checker, a Google Chrome extension, alerts users if a retailer or business they are visiting has any connections to forced labor involving Uyghur Muslims. The tool had been experiencing unusual activity in recent months, with fluctuating download numbers.

The Human Rights Foundation noticed a surge of suspicious one-star ratings in May and suspected it was part of a disinformation campaign or a bot attack. The reviews in question displayed similar cartoon avatars for profile pictures, nonsensical names, and broken English. Some of the reviews used phrases like "malicious slander" and "leakage of privacy," while others simply claimed that the tracker was uninteresting.

Upon being notified by the Human Rights Foundation, Google promptly investigated the situation and removed the reviews that violated its policies. However, the parties responsible for these negative reviews have not been identified.

The U.S. has accused China of implementing a widespread campaign of genocide against Uyghur Muslims, including allegations of forced labor practices in the Xinjiang region. The Uyghur Forced Labor Checker serves as an essential tool in raising awareness and holding businesses accountable for their connections to forced labor.

By removing the negative reviews targeted at the Uyghur Forced Labor Checker, Google has taken a stand against disinformation and ensured that the integrity of this valuable resource is maintained. This action demonstrates Google's commitment to supporting initiatives that help combat human rights abuses and promote transparency in supply chains.
