FIFA has taken disciplinary action against the President of the Spanish Football Association, Luis Rubiales, following his inappropriate behavior during the Women's World Cup final. Rubiales came under intense criticism after he kissed one of the players on the mouth after Spain's victory in the tournament.
The Spanish women's professional football league, Liga F, has called for the removal of Rubiales from his position as head of the football association. This request is based on Rubiales' obscene gestures during the game and his subsequent derogatory comments towards journalists. Liga F released a statement condemning his actions, stating that such behavior is unacceptable and goes against the social values they uphold. They believe that Rubiales' actions have tarnished the reputation of the Women's National Team.
In response to the incident, FIFA has announced that it will be opening disciplinary proceedings against Rubiales. They have affirmed their commitment to respecting the integrity of all individuals and firmly condemn any behavior to the contrary. A spokesperson for the Spanish Football Association declined to comment on the matter. The High Council of Sports, however, confirmed receiving the complaint from Liga F.
During the celebrations following Spain's victory, Rubiales was seen grabbing the head of forward Jennifer Hermoso and kissing her on the lips. Hermoso later expressed her discomfort with the incident. Rubiales has faced widespread criticism from the media, players, and political leaders, including Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.
Initially dismissing the episode as "nonsense," Rubiales later issued an apology, expressing regret for his actions in a video statement. He acknowledged the need for greater caution and understanding of his role as the president of an important institution like the football association.
Futpro, a union representing women football players, including Hermoso, released a statement condemning Rubiales' actions and calling for appropriate sanctions to be imposed. They emphasized the need to protect soccer players from such unacceptable behavior.
The Spanish football association will hold an extraordinary general assembly to decide the future of Rubiales, and they have also initiated an internal investigation into integrity matters related to the incident.
