The scorching heat that has gripped the Mediterranean region this summer has now shifted to eastern Europe. Moldova experienced temperatures exceeding 39C (102F) on Tuesday, prompting extreme heat warnings in Romania as well. Authorities in Moldova also issued wildfire alerts due to the intense heat. Ukraine has also been impacted by the soaring temperatures. This sharp contrast with the storms and flooding wreaking havoc in central Europe and Norway has left the continent divided weather-wise.

According to Europe's meteorological network, heavy rain and the risk of landslides are forecasted for southern Germany. Rain warnings are in place in Barcelona, while Madrid is expecting an unseasonably cool temperature of 14.5C next Tuesday. Thunderstorms are expected in parts of France and northern Italy, and strong winds are forecasted for Sardinia.

This temporary shift in weather brings respite to western Europe after a period of extreme summer heat, which gave rise to devastating wildfires, violent storms, and widespread flooding. Scientists believe that global warming is intensifying these events, with July being recorded as the hottest month ever.

Alvaro Silva, a climate expert with the World Meteorological Organization, emphasizes that these extreme weather events are the "new normal" and not surprising. The frequency and intensity of heatwaves and heavy precipitation are increasing, and there is solid scientific evidence that human-induced climate change from greenhouse gas emissions is the primary driver of these changes.

As eastern Europe battles scorching temperatures and the risk of wildfires, western Europe is bracing for heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds. The impacts of climate change continue to reshape the continent's weather patterns, leaving no doubt about the urgent need for concerted efforts to mitigate and adapt to a changing climate.
