Flash floods triggered by heavy rains in northwest Turkey have resulted in the tragic deaths of at least seven people, according to reports from the state news agency Anadolu. The devastating floods have caused significant damage in various regions, including Kirklareli province near the borders with Bulgaria and Greece, as well as districts in Istanbul.
In Kirklareli province, five people lost their lives, while one person remains missing after houses were submerged in floodwaters on Tuesday night. This catastrophe has brought immense sorrow to the affected communities. Meanwhile, in Istanbul's Basaksehir and Kucukcekmece districts, two individuals were killed, and 31 others were injured, as cars were seen floating in the floodwaters. The scenes in these areas were both shocking and distressing.
Rescue operations are currently underway, as the authorities strive to locate the missing person and provide support to those affected by the floods. Turkey's Interior Minister, Ali Yerlikaya, has reassured affected families that financial assistance will be provided to help them recover from the devastating consequences of the floods.
The extent of the rainfall in Istanbul was unprecedented, with the governor's office reporting that the city received around 125 kilograms of rain per square meter in less than six hours. This amount is equivalent to the average precipitation Istanbul typically experiences throughout the entire month of September. The sheer intensity of the rainfall has overwhelmed the city's infrastructure and led to severe flooding.
These flash floods are part of a broader pattern of extreme weather events across southeast Europe, resulting in widespread damage and forcing communities to evacuate. Central Greece has also experienced devastating floods, leading to the loss of two lives as homes and businesses were inundated. Similarly, in Bulgaria's Black Sea region, two individuals tragically lost their lives due to the flooding.
The impact of these floods serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to address climate change and strengthen infrastructure to mitigate the devastating effects of extreme weather events. As authorities and communities continue to respond to these crises, solidarity and support become paramount in helping affected regions recover and rebuild.
