Hawaii's renowned Kilauea volcano has once again burst into action after a dormant period of nearly three months, with mesmerizing lava flows illuminating one of its craters. The eruption commenced on Sunday afternoon in Halemaʻumaʻu crater, located in the summit caldera of Kilauea at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, according to reports from the US Geological Survey (USGS). As the youngest and most active volcano on the island, Kīlauea has witnessed numerous summit eruptions since 2020.

The eruption was preceded by a pronounced period of intense seismic activity and rapid uplift of the summit, stated the USGS on Sunday night. Captivating footage captured lava spewing from fissures at the base of the crater, although the eruption remained within the confines of the crater throughout Sunday. Importantly, the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency reassured that, as of now, communities were not under any lava threat, as the eruption remains limited to the summit.

In response to the eruption, Kilauea's volcano alert level has been raised to "warning" as authorities meticulously evaluate the hazards emerging from this renewed activity, as warned by the USGS. The initial phases of eruptions are intrinsically dynamic and can rapidly evolve. The primary concerns in such situations are volcanic gas emissions and the presence of delicate strands of volcanic glass, also known as Pele's hair, which can be carried by the wind. The USGS urged residents and visitors to minimize exposure to these volcanic particles, as they may cause skin and eye irritation.

This recent eruption follows a brief eruption in June of this year, which captivated spectators with mesmerizing lava fountain bursts that soared as high as 200 feet. The eruption subsequently concluded on June 19, as confirmed by the USGS. Prior to that, Kilauea erupted in January after experiencing a reprieve in December – the first pause since September 2021, when an eruption was confined to Kilauea's summit crater.

However, the most devastating eruption in recent Hawaiian history occurred in 2018, resulting in the destruction of hundreds of homes and necessitating evacuations in the surrounding neighborhoods. In the years that have followed this catastrophic event, Kilauea has experienced a constant state of flux, with periods of serenity, unrest, and sporadic eruptions.

Sunday's eruption at Kilauea serves as a poignant reminder of the sacredness ingrained in this remarkable landscape, as highlighted by Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park on social media. It is important to approach this natural wonder with the utmost reverence, as eruptions hold spiritual significance in the native Hawaiian tradition. Kilauea's summit is considered sacred and is believed to be the abode of Pele, the Hawaiian volcano deity, according to the National Park Service.
