Adidas has introduced its latest entry into the competitive world of super-shoes with the release of the Adizero Adios Pro Evo 1, a high-performance running sneaker priced at $500. Boasting the title of Adidas' lightest racing shoe ever, it weighs a mere 138 grams (4.9 ounces), making it 40% lighter than the highly acclaimed Adizero Adios Pro 3. However, this new model comes at a hefty price tag, being twice as expensive as its predecessor and considerably pricier than Nike's Alphafly 2, which retails for $275.
The launch of the Adios Pro Evo 1 coincides with the start of the fall marathon season, with the prestigious Berlin marathon scheduled for September 24. Given that Adidas sponsors the event, it appears to be a strategic move by the company to debut their latest innovation. The Berlin marathon is renowned worldwide for its flat and fast course, and it was in this race last year that Kenya's Eliud Kipchoge shattered the world record with a remarkable time of 2:01:09. It is worth noting, though, that Kipchoge, a Nike ambassador, will not be sporting the Adidas shoes in his title defense this year.
Targeted towards professional athletes and ambitious runners, the Adios Pro Evo 1 is specifically designed for racing purposes rather than everyday use. The shoe features Adidas' signature carbon "energy rods" in the sole, a technology that was introduced during the initial wave of super-shoes. Nike set the trend by incorporating carbon plates with lightweight and responsive foam, effectively enhancing energy return with each stride. Since then, numerous brands like Hoka, Brooks, and New Balance have followed suit, striving to provide runners with advanced technology to achieve faster race times.
Adidas has made several enhancements in the Adios Pro Evo 1, including a revamped version of their Lightstrike Pro foam, the removal of a sock liner to reduce weight, and the introduction of a new outsole. These improvements aim to optimize performance and further enhance the shoe's lightweight construction.
As the heat intensifies in the race to create the ultimate running shoe, Adidas has made a strong statement with the Adizero Adios Pro Evo 1. With its exceptional performance features and a price tag that reflects its professional-grade capabilities, it represents the pinnacle of athletic footwear technology. As competitors continue to push boundaries in the super-shoe realm, it remains to be seen how the Adios Pro Evo 1 will measure up in the ever-evolving world of marathon running.
