Musk's ongoing dispute with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), a Jewish civil rights group, stems from his accusations of the organization undermining X's advertising revenue. After Musk took over X and fired most of its staff, the ADL, alongside other civil rights watchdogs, highlighted a rise in extremist content on the platform. In response, Musk threatened to sue the ADL and liked X posts supporting the "BantheADL" hashtag.

Netanyahu expressed his hope that Musk would act within the First Amendment's confines to combat antisemitism and hate, acknowledging the difficulty of the task. Musk responded by acknowledging the vast number of daily posts on the platform, ranging from 100 million to 200 million. While policing hate speech in advance is challenging, the Tesla CEO stressed his commitment to "deamplify" such content, resolute in not promoting hate speech that contradicts popular demand.

Musk recently asserted his support for free speech but made it clear that he strongly opposes any form of antisemitism. Netanyahu met with Musk in Silicon Valley before attending the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The Israeli Prime Minister sought to dispel the notion that he is a pariah amidst political unrest in Israel that has sparked protests supported by many tech entrepreneurs in the country.

Notably, Israeli tech workers residing in the Bay Area staged a demonstration during Netanyahu's visit, protesting against the proposed judicial reforms. As Netanyahu met with Musk, hundreds of demonstrators gathered, voicing their concerns regarding the reforms and underlining the importance of democracy.

The meeting between Netanyahu and Musk centered around discussions on artificial intelligence (AI). Netanyahu aimed to showcase Israel's AI potential, embarking on a full day of events which included a tour of a Tesla factory and a ride in an autonomous vehicle. The Israeli Prime Minister also expressed his intention to secure investment from Musk, the world's richest man, for Israel's AI startups in the coming years.

While tensions between Musk and Netanyahu were downplayed by an official traveling with the Prime Minister, it is worth noting that the two have been in contact since 2018. They have previously discussed the potential benefits and risks of artificial intelligence and share common views on the topic.

In their conversation, Netanyahu raised concerns about unchecked AI, highlighting potential threats such as the disruption of democracy, mind manipulation, crime syndicates, and AI-driven warfare. The Israeli Prime Minister emphasized his plans to establish Israel's AI policy in the months to come.
