Bring a Trailer, the popular online car auction platform, has unveiled its inaugural mobile application. Recognizing the ever-increasing mobile usage among its user base, the company saw the need to provide a more streamlined and user-friendly experience for its customers. Co-founder Randy Nonnenberg stated that their current web page can be overwhelming to navigate, likening it to drinking from a fire hose. With a vast marketplace and diverse user needs, the new app aims to offer a more personalized approach to car auctions.
The free app offers a range of features designed to enhance the auction experience. Users can easily identify cars of interest and track ongoing auctions, thanks to new tools that help organize and categorize searches for specific models. The app is optimized for touchscreen navigation, allowing for seamless tapping and swiping, eliminating the need for extensive vertical scrolling on the website.
In a test an early version of the app showcased options to select and follow favorites, receive push notifications for ongoing auctions, and sort cars based on "recently viewed" and "because you like" categories. The app's initial release will be available for download in the United States and Canada, with plans to expand to other countries in the future.
Bring a Trailer was founded in 2007 by Nonnenberg and his friends as a platform to buy and sell vintage vehicles. Over the years, the San Francisco-based company has grown exponentially, boasting over 1 million active users and 400,000 registered bidders. In 2022, Bring a Trailer achieved sales totaling more than $1.35 billion, a 63% increase from the previous year. By the end of August, the platform had a 76% sale rate across 3,559 listed vehicles.
Nonnenberg acknowledged that the company's focus on creating an app was not a priority in its early days. However, since its acquisition by Hearst Autos in 2020, the company has now recognized the importance of investing in meaningful ways to enhance user experience.
What sets Bring a Trailer apart from traditional auctions is its broad appeal to car enthusiasts. The platform allows anyone to observe the bidding process, from high-value luxury cars to vintage Ford trucks. As bids are placed, a lively conversation unfolds in the comments section, providing valuable insights and information about the cars. The platform's competitive advantage lies in its lower fees compared to brick-and-mortar auction houses. Buyers are charged a 5% service fee, capped at $5,000, while sellers pay a one-time $99 listing fee. This model has been so successful that established auction houses have introduced their own real-time web sales in an attempt to compete.
Bring a Trailer's new mobile application marks a significant step in its evolution and commitment to meeting the needs of its growing user base. With enhanced functionalities and a more personalized approach, the app aims to revolutionize the car auction experience and further solidify its position as a leading player in the market.
