Ethiopia's Tigist Assefa made history at the Berlin Marathon, obliterating the women's marathon world record with an astounding time of 2 hours, 11 minutes, and 53 seconds. Assefa not only secured her second consecutive Berlin Marathon title but also shaved over two minutes off the previous record set by Brigid Kosgei at the 2019 Chicago Marathon. However, the new world record is still subject to the standard ratification procedure set by World Athletics.
Despite being relatively new to the marathon distance, this was only Assefa's third competitive marathon after transitioning from middle-distance running. Her performance was nothing short of exceptional, with the Ethiopian athlete maintaining an incredible pace throughout the race.
Right from the start, the race was intense, with the top 12 women running at world record pace within the first 15 kilometers. By the halfway mark, Assefa had established a commanding lead and was more than a minute ahead of the world record pace. With sheer determination, she continued to surge ahead.
Assefa crossed the finish line with a staggering lead of almost six minutes over second-place finisher Sheila Chepkirui from Kenya and third-place Magdalena Shauri from Tanzania, who set a national record with her remarkable time of 2 hours, 18 minutes, and 41 seconds.
In the men's race, Kenya's Eliud Kipchoge also made history by winning a record fifth title at the Berlin Marathon. He completed the race in a remarkable time of 2 hours, 2 minutes, and 42 seconds, marking it as the fifth-fastest time of his career.
Throughout the race, Kipchoge faced strong competition from Derseh Kindie from Ethiopia. However, the two-time Olympic champion was able to pull ahead around the 31-kilometer mark and secured victory with a 31-second lead.
This year's Berlin Marathon showcased an extraordinary level of speed and talent, with a record-breaking nine men finishing inside the 2:05 mark and eight women finishing within 2 hours and 20 minutes. The marathon proved to be an exhilarating display of endurance and exceptional performance from both Assefa and Kipchoge.
