The US Weather Prediction Center has officially launched its winter desk, signaling the beginning of the winter forecasting season. As frost advisories and freeze warnings start to surface in northern states, it's only a matter of time before snowfall becomes a common occurrence. Currently, only a minuscule 0.1% of the 48 contiguous states is covered in snow, according to the National Operational Hydrologic Remote Sensing Center. Despite this, the forecast doesn't expect much snow in the near future for regions like the Sierra Nevada in California and the Rocky Mountains in states such as Colorado, Idaho, Wyoming, and Utah.
Looking ahead, the presence of warm water in both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans raises questions about the potential impact on winter forecasts. The oceans, known for their slower release of heat compared to land, still hold significant warmth from recent months. As a result, forecasters are uncertain about how this record warmth in the oceans will influence winter weather patterns.
In other weather news, Tropical Storm Philippe is expected to weaken as it gradually moves across the Atlantic. It is predicted to transform into a tropical depression before reaching the Caribbean Islands. Following Philippe, Invest 94W is closely trailing and has a high probability of developing into a tropical depression or tropical storm within the next few days.
Vietnam, a major rice exporter, is urging farmers to plant their crops early due to concerns about a potential water shortage linked to El Niño. The El Niño phenomenon often brings hotter and drier conditions to certain parts of Asia, leading to drought and detrimental effects on crops. Vietnam's Plant Production Department has estimated a potential decrease of 20,000 tons in rice paddy production from the delta this season compared to the previous year, resulting in an estimated yield of about 10.7 million tons.
While most of continental Europe is expected to experience a cooling trend in the coming days, temperatures will still remain higher than normal for the first week of October, according to Maxar Technologies.
