U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland addressed reporters, asserting that the American government is well aware of the entities responsible for poisoning its citizens with fentanyl. He stated, "We know that this global fentanyl supply chain, which ends with the deaths of Americans, often starts with chemical companies in China."

The U.S. Treasury Department revealed that it has sanctioned 28 individuals and entities involved in the illicit drug trade, particularly highlighting a substantial China-based network. The Biden administration has consistently targeted Chinese entities in its efforts to curb the importation of fentanyl.

Simultaneously, the Justice Department unsealed eight indictments against China-based companies and their employees, charging them with various crimes linked to fentanyl and methamphetamine production. These indictments also encompassed the distribution of synthetic opioids and sales resulting from precursor chemicals.

China's embassy in Washington has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding these actions taken by the United States. However, given the significant impact on Chinese entities, it is certain to be a matter of concern for the Chinese government.

The Treasury Department accused the network targeted by the sanctions of being responsible for manufacturing and distributing fentanyl, as well as methamphetamine and MDMA precursors. It emphasized that this network possesses the capability to produce large quantities of these illicit substances and other chemicals.

Fentanyl precursors are the chemicals used in the production of the potent synthetic opioid that has contributed to a surge in drug overdose deaths in the United States in recent years. By imposing sanctions on key players in the fentanyl trade, the United States hopes to disrupt the supply chain and reduce the availability of this dangerous drug.

In addition to Chinese entities, the sanctions also extend to two entities and one individual based in Canada. These comprehensive measures freeze any U.S. assets belonging to the targeted entities and individuals, while also prohibiting Americans from engaging in any business transactions with them.

The United States aims to send a strong message with these actions and demonstrate its determination to combat the fentanyl crisis by addressing its root causes and the international network involved in its production and distribution.
