In a surprising turn of events, a remarkable supercar called the Simurgh has emerged from war-torn Afghanistan and made its debut at the Doha edition of the prestigious Geneva International Motor Show. With its sleek black exterior, reminiscent of the Batmobile, the Simurgh immediately commands attention. But what truly sets this car apart is not just its striking appearance, but its country of origin – Afghanistan, a nation currently ravaged by the Taliban's control for the past two years.
Inspired by the mythical Persian bird of the same name, known for its extraordinary strength and size, the Simurgh was a labor of love that took a dedicated team of 30 individuals five long years to bring to life. Mohammad Reza Ahmadi, the CEO of Entop and the mastermind behind this extraordinary creation, envisioned the Simurgh as a symbol that would put Afghanistan back on the world map, showcasing its rich heritage and resilience.
While Afghanistan's treacherous mountainous terrain seems more suited for rugged four-wheel drives and SUVs, Ahmadi was determined to create something truly unique. He wanted to challenge the conventional notion of what an Afghan-made vehicle could be. According to Ahmadi, "The Simurgh represents the heroes and art of Afghanistan. A SUV won’t be the same."
Unveiled towards the end of 2022, the Simurgh gained global attention when a video of an earlier version, then called Mada9, was shared by a Taliban spokesman. In the video, former insurgents were seen marveling at the awe-inspiring creation. The juxtaposition of this captivating supercar emerging from a country grappling with poverty and egregious human rights violations creates a perplexing image.
However, Ahmadi is determined to demonstrate another side of Afghanistan through the Simurgh. With the support of more than 45,000 people who contributed $130,000 through crowdfunding, Ahmadi managed to bring his creation to the international stage at the Doha exhibition.
Now, Ahmadi and his team at Entop have set their sights on an even more audacious goal – raising €30 million ($32 million) to perfect the Simurgh and enter it into the legendary 24-hour endurance race, Le Mans. If successful, this feat would solidify the Simurgh's credibility as a legitimate contender in the world of high-performance sports cars.
The journey of the Simurgh represents far more than just the construction of an exotic supercar. It is a testament to the indomitable spirit and unwavering determination of the Afghan people. Against all odds, they are striving to rebuild and redefine their nation's identity on the world stage. The Simurgh is not just a vehicle; it is a symbol of hope, perseverance, and the relentless pursuit of dreams.
