In a recent announcement, the U.S. auto regulator has mandated the recall of approximately 54,676 Tesla Model X vehicles manufactured between 2021-2023. The recall has been initiated as these vehicles have been found to have a faulty vehicle controller, which fails to detect low levels of brake fluid and does not display a warning light as it should.
To address this issue, Tesla has promptly released an over-the-air (OTA) software update, which will be provided to the affected vehicles free of charge. This update aims to rectify the problem identified by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Fortunately, as of October 10th, Tesla is not aware of any accidents, injuries, or fatalities resulting from this specific condition. This news brings a sense of relief to both Tesla and vehicle owners, ensuring that no harm has occurred due to the faulty vehicle controller.
While NHTSA has taken decisive action in recalling the affected Model X vehicles, it is important to note that this is not the first issue surrounding Tesla vehicles that has prompted regulatory scrutiny. Earlier this year, in August, the NHTSA launched an investigation into approximately 280,000 Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles due to reported instances of loss of steering control and power steering malfunctions.
Tesla has not yet responded to Reuters' request for comment on the recent recall. However, the electric vehicle manufacturer has been known to promptly address concerns and provide necessary updates to rectify any identified problems. This commitment to customer safety is evident in their swift release of the OTA software update to mitigate the risks associated with the faulty vehicle controller in the Model X.
The recall underscores the importance of continual monitoring and assessment of vehicle components and systems in terms of safety and performance. It also highlights the significance of over-the-air software updates in addressing potential issues swiftly, without requiring vehicle owners to bring their cars to service centers for manual inspections and fixes.
As the popularity of electric vehicles continues to rise, it is crucial for manufacturers and regulators to prioritize safety measures and promptly address any identified risks. Through proactive actions like recalls and software updates, the industry can ensure that vehicles maintain the highest safety standards, providing peace of mind to consumers and enhancing the overall reputation of electric vehicles.
