Israel and SpaceX in Talks for Starlink Internet Services During War. In response to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, Israel has revealed that it is in discussions with SpaceX to establish Starlink internet services. This move aims to enhance Israel's wartime communications capabilities, specifically in the event of a ground invasion in the Gaza Strip.
The Israeli Communications Ministry released a statement on Tuesday, highlighting that the deployment of Starlink would ensure continuous internet connectivity in towns situated along the frontlines. This marks the first time Israel has sought to rely on Starlink, which would serve as a backup option in case other communication systems get disrupted. However, SpaceX has not yet provided an official comment regarding these discussions.
With heavy airstrikes conducted in Gaza as retaliation for a deadly cross-border invasion that occurred on October 7, Israel continues its military campaign against Hamas. Unfortunately, the ongoing conflict has resulted in significant casualties, with over 2,800 Palestinians losing their lives. Israel has also halted vital supplies such as fuel, water, and electricity to the Hamas-run Strip, seemingly in preparation for a ground invasion, simultaneously amassing hundreds of thousands of troops along the frontlines.
Considering the situation, the Israeli ministry is also contemplating disconnecting the internet and phone services currently provided to Gaza. Furthermore, they have confirmed their efforts to shut down the Israeli offices of Al-Jazeera, a Qatari state-owned news network. The ministry alleges that Al-Jazeera is being used by Hamas for propaganda, incitement, and activities that harm national security during wartime.
As tensions remain high and the conflict continues to escalate, Israel seeks to augment its communication infrastructure to ensure uninterrupted connectivity for towns located near the frontlines. By exploring the possibility of partnering with SpaceX and utilizing Starlink's satellite-based internet services, Israel aims to establish a reliable backup system that can endure potential disruptions during wartime.
