Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has announced the end of her relationship with TV anchor Andrea Giambruno, the father of their child, after he made a series of controversial remarks. Meloni shared the news on social media platforms, garnering support from across the political spectrum. She expressed gratitude towards Giambruno for their daughter, Ginevra, but stated that their paths had diverged, prompting the need for action. Meloni came into power as the head of a right-wing coalition a year ago.

Last summer, Giambruno faced criticism when he suggested on-air that women could avoid being raped by not getting too drunk. Meloni, in response, defended herself, stressing that she should not be held accountable for her partner's remarks, nor should he be attacked simply due to their relationship. As a result, Giambruno has been temporarily suspended from anchoring his daily show on the Rete 4 channel, pending assessment by Mediaset, the company he works for.

Meloni, who often speaks about her upbringing in a single-mother household, has built her image around motherhood rather than her relationship. Her slogan, "I am Giorgia, I am a mother, I am a Christian," has become synonymous with her brand and was even turned into a popular campaign remix. Claudia Gina Hassan, a professor of sociology of communication at the University of Rome Tor Vergata, suggests that Meloni's announcement was an attempt to defuse a potential media scandal that could have spiraled out of control.

Since assuming office, Meloni has emphasized her dual identity as Italy's first female prime minister and a mother. She has made it a point to carve out family time during work trips, such as during the Group of 20 nations summit in Bali last year and the UN General Assembly last month when she opted for a pizza outing with her seven-year-old daughter over a public event.

Meloni's social media post garnered approximately two million views within hours and received support from opposition parties. Alessandra Moretti, a member of the center-left Democratic Party, commended Meloni for her actions in a complex situation, highlighting her autonomy as a woman.

Protecting motherhood and tackling Italy's low birth rate have been central components of Meloni's domestic policies. In fact, the recently presented budget law introduced fiscal incentives for families with two or more children, further underscoring her commitment to ensuring the well-being of mothers and encouraging population growth.

As Giorgia Meloni reshapes her public image in the aftermath of the breakup, it remains to be seen how her narrative centered around motherhood and her political role will evolve. Nonetheless, her ability to handle personal matters with poise and maintain her focus on key policy objectives highlights her astute media acumen and political finesse.
