Bangladesh authorities have apprehended a prominent opposition leader following violent clashes that occurred during an anti-government rally, resulting in the deaths of at least two people, including a police officer, and numerous injuries. Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the secretary general of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), the largest opposition group in the country, has been implicated in an attack on the residence of the Chief Justice during the party's protest. Faruque Hossain, the spokesperson for the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, declared that Alamgir has been taken into custody and was presented before a trial court after intensive questioning that lasted nine hours while in police custody.
In addition to the attack on the Chief Justice's residence, Mirza Fakhrul Islam has also been accused of involvement in the killing of a police constable. The constable was reportedly beaten to death by an angry mob in a public lynching incident, which the Home Minister, Asaduzzaman Khan, attributed to BNP loyalists.
Earlier on Sunday, Mirza Fakhrul Islam, aged 75, was detained by authorities at his home. His wife, Rahat Ara Begum, informed reporters about the incident. Television footage showed the BNP leader waving to his supporters and journalists as he was driven away by the police.
Following the clashes, the police locked the main gate to the BNP headquarters in Dhaka and declared the area a "crime scene." Protests were forcefully suppressed by law enforcement agencies using tear gas shells and rubber bullets.
Despite the arrest of their leader, BNP supporters clashed with the police in the Narayanganj district on Sunday. In response, the party initiated a nationwide shutdown, known as a "hartal," to demonstrate their discontent.
The government's crackdown on the opposition has intensified in the wake of these clashes. The violent confrontations on Saturday resulted in the death of a police officer, further escalating tensions. Additionally, an opposition activist lost his life during the disturbances.
The situation remains tense, with authorities aiming to maintain order during the ongoing protests. As developments unfold, it will be crucial for all parties involved to seek a peaceful resolution to prevent further bloodshed and restore stability in Bangladesh.
