A powerful storm named Ciaran is expected to pummel the United Kingdom, bringing disruptive winds and heavy rainfall. The storm will traverse Cornwall, Wales, and parts of England overnight Wednesday and into Thursday, according to meteorologists from the UK Met Office. Rachel Ayers, a meteorologist, explained in a video briefing that southern regions of the UK will be particularly affected by Ciaran's impact, which could lead to significant disruptions.

In the US, critical fire conditions continue to pose a threat across Southern California. Areas such as Oxnard, Palmdale, and Thousand Oaks are especially vulnerable, with an elevated risk of fires. A wider region, including parts along the border with Arizona, is also facing increased danger. The National Weather Service has issued red flag fire warnings, which are in effect until 10 p.m. today.

The current fire risk is associated with Santa Ana season, a period when high pressure over inland areas of the United States intersects with low pressure off the Pacific coast. This weather pattern prompts strong offshore winds as they cross mountain ranges, causing air to become dry and hot. The arid conditions combined with gusty winds create favorable conditions for fires to spread quickly. Similar winds, referred to as Sundowners or Diablos, are affecting areas further north.

Meanwhile, a large portion of the southern and central United States, extending into the Midwest, is experiencing a drop in temperatures. This has led to freeze warnings being issued for the region. In contrast, coastal areas from Maryland to Connecticut, including New York City and Long Island, are under advisories and warnings for coastal flooding. Tides are expected to reach higher levels than usual, posing potential risks to coastal communities.

As Storm Ciaran sweeps through the UK and the US grapples with freezing temperatures and fire threats, both countries are bracing themselves for challenging weather conditions. Residents are advised to stay updated on the latest weather reports and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety amidst these natural phenomena.
