In a surprising announcement, Amazon.com Inc. founder Jeff Bezos revealed his plans to move from the Seattle region to Miami. The decision comes as Bezos aims to be closer to his parents and the Cape Canaveral operations of Blue Origin LLC, his space exploration company. As the world's third-wealthiest man, Bezos took to Instagram to share the news, accompanied by a video taken in his Seattle garage, where he founded Amazon back in 1994.
The move holds significant emotional weight for Bezos, who has resided in Seattle for a longer period than anywhere else and has countless cherished memories in the city. As the largest private employer in Seattle, Amazon played a pivotal role in transforming the area into a thriving technology hub. Although Bezos stepped down as Amazon CEO in 2021, assuming the position of executive chairman, the company remains a central part of his life. His successor, Andy Jassy, now leads the e-commerce giant.
Recently, Bezos has demonstrated his interest in Miami by purchasing two properties on Indian Creek, also known as the "Billionaire Bunker." This man-made island located in the greater Miami area drew Bezos in with its exclusivity and security. Impressively, he acquired a seven-bedroom mansion for $79 million, shortly after purchasing a neighboring property for $68 million.
The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted Bezos to spend more time away from Seattle, as reported by employees familiar with his activities. Besides Miami, Bezos owns homes in Washington, D.C., New York City, Los Angeles, and Maui. In addition, he possesses a vast 300,000-acre ranch in Texas, serving as the base for Blue Origin's New Shepard rocket launch site. Notably, Bezos has also invested in his opulent $500 million superyacht named Koru.
Miami has increasingly attracted the attention of the ultra-wealthy, who are drawn to the city's combination of a desirable lifestyle and favorable tax environment. Prominent figures like finance titans Ken Griffin, Dan Loeb, and Josh Harris have notably secured luxurious waterfront mansions in Miami Beach since the onset of the pandemic. Even soccer star Lionel Messi, who joined Inter Miami of Major League Soccer, recently acquired an oceanside mansion in a South Florida suburb.
In a further demonstration of Miami's appeal, Ken Griffin relocated his business's global headquarters from Chicago to the city and has plans to construct a headquarters costing at least $1 billion. As for Bezos, the decision to move to Miami signifies not only his desire to be closer to his family and Blue Origin's operations but also his embrace of a new chapter amidst the vibrant and flourishing atmosphere that Miami offers.
