Record-breaking rain has caused widespread flooding in Italy's Tuscany region as Storm Ciarán made its way into the country, trapping residents in their homes, inundating hospitals, and causing chaos on the roads. The storm's relentless downpours have claimed the lives of at least six people in Italy and one person in Albania, bringing the total death toll in Europe to 14 this week.

As Storm Ciarán continued its eastward movement across the continent, it left a trail of destruction in its wake. In Albania, a motorist lost control of their vehicle on a flooded road and tragically lost their life. Many roads across the country, including in the capital Tirana, were submerged under floodwaters. The Balkan region experienced huge waves pounding its shores, while strong winds uprooted trees and tore off rooftops. Ferry services connecting Croatia's islands with the coastline were also suspended.

In Italy, the Civil Protection authorities reported that an unprecedented 200 millimeters (nearly eight inches) of rain fell in just three hours, causing riverbanks to overflow and resulting in severe flooding. Shocking videos emerged showing cars being swept away by the powerful floodwaters. The Governor of Tuscany, Eugenio Giani, stated that the storm had caused the most extensive rainfall in the last 100 years.

Climate scientists point to human-induced climate change as a contributing factor in the intensity of storms like Ciarán, which bring heavier rainfall and more severe damage. Nello Musumeci, Italy's Minister for Civil Protection, acknowledged that weather patterns in Italy have become more tropical in nature compared to two decades ago.

Tragically, the storm claimed the lives of several individuals in Tuscany. An 85-year-old man and an 84-year-old woman were found dead in their flooded homes near Prato, north of Florence. Another couple was reported missing near the town of Vinci, while a person in Livorno province also lost their life. At least two people remain missing in Tuscany, and an off-duty firefighter is reported missing in the Veneto mountains. Several regions remain on high alert as the storm threatens to move towards southern Italy.

The impact of Storm Ciarán on Italy has been significant, with around 48,000 households left without electricity. High-speed train services between Florence and Milan, as well as smaller rail lines in Tuscany, have been disrupted. In addition, at least four hospitals, including those in Pisa and Mugello, have been flooded, causing further chaos and putting lives at risk.

The mayor of Prato expressed shock at the devastation caused by the floodwaters, but also emphasized the resilience and determination of the community to rebuild. Throughout Tuscany, residents worked tirelessly to clean up the damage caused by the storm.

Across Europe, the storm's impact extended beyond Italy. Storm Ciarán wreaked havoc in Spain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany, claiming the lives of seven individuals, causing travel disruptions, and leaving thousands without power.

As the storm gradually recedes in some areas, recovery efforts are underway, with emergency workers clearing debris and restoring essential services. However, Corsica in the Mediterranean is now facing fierce winds, while regions in the Pyrenees in the southwest of France are under flood warnings. Over half a million households in France remain without electricity, and trains and roads have been severely affected.

Government officials, including French President Emmanuel Macron, have visited affected areas to assess the damage and provide support to affected communities. Meanwhile, climate experts continue to emphasize the link between extreme weather events and the changing climate, urging for greater efforts to mitigate the impact of climate change.

The destructive force of Storm Ciarán serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for global action to address climate change and its consequences. As extreme weather events become increasingly prevalent, it is crucial to prioritize measures that protect vulnerable communities and reduce the impact of such disasters.
