Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg has recently undergone knee surgery to repair a torn ligament he sustained during a mixed martial arts (MMA) session. The billionaire tech executive shared the news on his Instagram account, along with several photos documenting his hospital stay. Despite the injury, Zuckerberg expressed his determination to continue his MMA training, with a goal of participating in a competitive fight early next year.
The Facebook founder, who recently rebranded his social media company to Meta, is well-known for his hands-on approach to the business, involving himself in various ventures such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and the metaverse. In addition to his business endeavors, Zuckerberg has developed a strong interest in MMA, which he took up during the pandemic.
Zuckerberg's involvement in MMA has gone beyond casual interest, as he even constructed his own octagonal fighting ring in his backyard. Just a month ago, he shared a photo of himself with black eyes and a bruised nose, jokingly admitting that his sparring sessions had become a bit too intense.
Keeping their CEO's safety in mind, Meta Platforms invests significantly in protecting Zuckerberg. According to a regulatory filing from February, the company planned to allocate $14 million of pre-tax spending on his personal security for the year, an increase from the previous annual amount of $10 million. It's important to note that this figure does not account for additional security expenses incurred by the company on Zuckerberg's behalf.
Mark Zuckerberg's commitment to MMA training and his willingness to participate in a competitive fight exemplify his ambitious nature and desire to explore various arenas, both in business and in personal endeavors. As he embarks on his recovery journey, it will be interesting to see how his involvement in the MMA world evolves further and how he balances his passion for this intense sport with his responsibilities as the CEO of Meta Platforms.
