In a recent development, the United Nations has revealed that no foreigners, dual-nationals, or injured Palestinians were able to leave the Gaza Strip over the weekend. It remains uncertain whether they will be able to do so in the near future, as the situation remains unresolved. The UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs stated on Monday that this was due to the failure of Hamas, Israel, and Egypt to reach an agreement regarding the safe evacuation of patients from northern Gaza.
The UN report did not indicate whether there might be a possibility of some individuals being able to leave on Monday. This news comes after hundreds of US, UK, and other foreign citizens were able to leave Gaza on November 1 through the Rafah border crossing with Egypt. This marked the first time that people trapped inside the besieged territory were able to escape since the Israeli-Hamas war began on October 7.
The conflict between Israel and Hamas has been devastating, resulting in the deaths of over 1400 people, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. Following Hamas's incursion into southern Israel, the Israeli military launched a heavy bombardment of Gaza and deployed ground troops. As Israeli forces concentrated their presence in the north around Gaza City, civilians were urged to evacuate to the south, particularly to the Rafah area.
Hamas has accused Israel of targeting ambulances and preventing wounded Palestinians from seeking medical treatment in Egypt. The Israeli military claimed responsibility for an attack on an ambulance near a hospital on Saturday, alleging that it was being used to transport Hamas fighters. However, the health ministry in Gaza dismissed this claim as "baseless."
The agreement between Israel, Egypt, and Hamas that allowed for the evacuation of injured civilians, foreigners, and Palestinians with foreign passports was a rare instance of diplomatic progress amidst the ongoing conflict. According to the UN, more than 1,100 individuals had passed through the Rafah crossing to Egypt on November 2 and 3.
It is worth noting that Hamas initially attempted to include many of its own fighters on the list of names for evacuation to Egypt. However, after objections from the United States, Hamas withdrew those names. Hamas is backed by Iran and has been designated a terrorist group by the US and the European Union.
As the situation in Gaza remains uncertain, it is vital for all parties involved to prioritize the safe evacuation of those in need. The international community must continue to work towards finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict and ensure the well-being and safety of all individuals in the region.
