South Florida is preparing for potentially severe weather as a weather front moves across the region, bringing heavy rain and the risk of floods. The National Weather Service has issued flood watches for the area, including Miami, as the system is expected to arrive late Wednesday and continue into Thursday. David Roth, a senior branch forecaster at the US Weather Prediction Center, warned that as much as three to eight inches of rain could fall, with some areas possibly experiencing up to 10 inches. Additionally, there is a 10% chance that the system could develop into a tropical storm, according to the US National Hurricane Center.
While it is more likely that the conditions will not be favorable for tropical storm development, the storm is anticipated to track up the East Coast, leading to rainfall in Maine and the Canadian Maritimes over the weekend. In addition to the flood threat, a high-surf advisory has been issued for Florida's southeast coast, including Miami. Waves as high as 10 feet are expected, along with dangerous rip currents.
Apart from the system affecting Florida, another weather disturbance in the western Caribbean has caught the attention of forecasters. There is a 30% chance that this system could develop into the next Atlantic storm within the next 48 hours, according to the hurricane center. Regardless of development, it is likely to bring heavy rain to the region, including Haiti, which is particularly vulnerable to mudslides and flooding.
In the Pacific, Tropical Cyclone Mal has already passed by Fiji and is expected to weaken as it moves away from land. However, forecasters are monitoring two other systems in the western Pacific to determine if they will develop further into tropical storms. Additionally, there is another system of interest in the Bay of Bengal in the Indian Ocean.
Meanwhile, the United Kingdom is also preparing for its share of turbulent weather. An Atlantic storm is forecasted to sweep across the southern UK on Thursday, bringing with it clouds, rain, and strong winds. The UK Met Office has warned of up to three to four centimeters of rainfall and gale-force winds in southern areas.
As the impending storm approaches, residents and authorities in Miami are taking necessary precautions to mitigate the flood risk and ensure the safety of the local community. With heavy rain and strong winds expected, it is crucial for residents to stay informed about weather updates and follow any evacuation or safety instructions given by local authorities.
