Beyoncé's concert film, "Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé," has taken the box office by storm, claiming the number one spot with an impressive debut. The film, which showcases her Grammy-winning album tour, raked in an estimated $21 million in North American ticket sales, according to AMC Theatres. This accomplishment is notable, especially considering the traditionally slow post-Thanksgiving, early December box office. In fact, "Renaissance" has surpassed expectations, becoming the first film in 20 years to open over $20 million on this weekend, since "The Last Samurai."

"Renaissance" is an important project for Beyoncé as she took on multiple roles as the writer, director, and producer of the film. It premiered in 2,539 theaters across the United States and Canada, as well as in 94 international territories where it earned an additional $6.4 million from 2,621 theaters. Elizabeth Frank, AMC Theatres executive vice president of worldwide programming, expressed gratitude to Beyoncé for bringing her incredible film directly to her fans and praised her talents as a performer, producer, and director.

The weekend saw the release of several other films, including "Godzilla Minus One," the Hindi-language film "Animal," Angel Studios’ sci-fi thriller "The Shift," and Lionsgate's revenge pic "Silent Night." However, the overall weekend box office was slow, with films in the top 10 expected to gross only $85 million combined.

Despite facing competition, "Renaissance" managed to captivate audiences. Although it didn't reach the record-breaking debut of "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour" in October, Beyoncé's concert film still had a strong start. It was never expected to match Swift's film, which is concluding its theatrical run with over $250 million worldwide. Prior to Swift's film, the biggest concert film debuts had not surpassed $32 million.

Beyoncé's "Renaissance" tour, spanning 39 cities and 56 shows, grossed over $500 million and attracted more than 2.7 million concertgoers. It is worth noting that Swift's ongoing "Eras Tour," with 151 dates, is expected to earn approximately $1.4 billion. Both Swift and Beyoncé chose to partner with AMC Theatres for the distribution of their films, deviating from the traditional studio route. Additionally, both artists have shown support for each other, making high-profile appearances at each other's premieres. They have also previously released films on Netflix and are reportedly receiving at least 50% of ticket sales.

"Renaissance" received glowing reviews from both critics and audiences, earning a perfect score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. It also received an A+ CinemaScore from opening weekend audiences who were surveyed. According to data firm EntTelligence, the film attracted an estimated audience of around 900,000, skewing slightly older compared to Swift's film.

The second-place spot was claimed by Lionsgate's "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes," which earned an estimated $14.5 million in its third weekend. The film's prequel has now garnered over $121 million domestically. In third place, the Japanese film "Godzilla Minus One" had an impressive opening for a foreign film this year, grossing $11 million from 2,308 locations. Distributed by Toho International, the film has already amassed $23 million in Japan, where it was well-received.

As the year approaches its end, the box office is expected to pick up with anticipated releases like "Wonka" and "The Color Purple." This year's box office is projected to reach around $9 billion, although it still falls short of the pre-pandemic norm of $11 billion. Nevertheless, there are numerous solid options available for moviegoers as the industry's awards season gains momentum.

Despite a slow Thanksgiving and a relatively quiet weekend, moviegoers can look forward to diverse and compelling films currently playing in theaters. According to Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for Comscore, this particular weekend offered a great selection of movies for audiences.
