Renowned pop star Billie Eilish recently confirmed that she unintentionally came out as queer in a recent interview with Variety magazine. The 21-year-old Grammy winner addressed the topic while walking the red carpet at a Variety event in Los Angeles on Saturday. Eilish expressed her desire to downplay the significance of revealing her sexual preferences, stating that she didn't intend to make a big deal out of it.
When asked by the red carpet interviewer whether she meant to come out in the cover article published in November, Eilish responded, "No, I didn't. But I kind of thought, 'Wasn't it obvious?'" The singer expressed surprise that some people were unaware of her sexuality, stating, "I just don't really believe in it. I'm just, like, 'Why can't we just exist?' I've been doing this for a long time, and I just didn't talk about it. Whoops."
Eilish went on to share her perspective on the situation, acknowledging that although she didn't intentionally come out, she saw the article's publication as inadvertently doing so. She expressed her excitement at the fact that people now know about her sexuality, adding, "It's cool that they know. I am for the girls." This comment reinforces her attraction to both men and women.
In the earlier Variety article, Eilish discussed her difficulty relating to other girls, but clarified that she deeply loves and is attracted to them. She emphasized her strong bonds with women in her life, including friends and family, remarking on their beauty and presence, which simultaneously attracts and intimidates her.
Despite her admission and subsequent clarification, Eilish took to Instagram on Sunday to criticize Variety for focusing on her sexuality during the red carpet interview. In her post, she thanked the magazine for the award she received but expressed her disappointment, stating, "I like boys and girls. Leave me alone about it, please. Literally, who cares?"
Eilish's accidental coming out and subsequent reaction highlight the importance of personal autonomy in sharing one's sexual orientation. She emphasizes the desire for society to focus on more meaningful topics and treat her sexuality as a non-issue.
