Apple Inc. is bolstering the security of its iPhones to prevent thieves from accessing critical device data if they manage to obtain a user's passcode. In the latest beta-test version of iOS 17.3, the company has introduced a new feature called Stolen Device Protection. This enhancement requires the use of Face ID or Touch ID, without the option to use a passcode, for activities such as accessing stored passwords, changing Apple ID settings, reviewing payment information, and disabling the Find My iPhone feature.

The motivation behind this new feature stems from instances where thieves have been able to access personal data on stolen iPhones, leading to financial losses and significant disruptions to a person's digital life. By mandating the use of Face ID or Touch ID for critical functions, a thief would have limited ability to inflict damage. Consequently, wiping and reselling stolen iPhones would become more difficult. Although Apple has not specified an exact release date for this feature, it is expected to be available to the public with the release of iOS 17.3 early next year.

Apple stated, "As threats to user devices continue to evolve, we work tirelessly to develop powerful new protections for our users and their data. In the rare cases where a thief can observe the user entering the passcode and then steal the device, Stolen Device Protection adds a sophisticated new layer of protection."

To provide an additional layer of security, the Stolen Device Protection feature incorporates a one-hour delay and requires a second Face ID or Touch ID scan for sensitive tasks such as changing an Apple ID password, disabling the Stolen Device Protection feature, creating a new passcode, and deactivating Touch ID or Face ID. However, if users are at a known location, such as their home or workplace, the delay does not apply.

Apple's commitment to enhancing iPhone security highlights the company's ongoing efforts to safeguard user data from evolving threats. By integrating these robust protection measures, Apple aims to provide users with peace of mind when utilizing their iPhones and protect against potential unauthorized access and misuse of personal information.
