Moldova's pro-European President, Maia Sandu, has announced her intention to run for a second term in the upcoming presidential elections in late 2024. Sandu, a former World Bank economist, aims to continue her efforts to solidify Moldova's European integration and forge stronger ties with the European Union.
In a statement released on the presidential website, Sandu expressed her commitment to completing crucial steps towards Moldova's integration with the EU. She stated, "We still have important steps to take, and I pledge to continue, if you will give me your trust for a new term."
Sandu first assumed the presidency in December 2020, defeating the pro-Moscow incumbent, Igor Dodon, in a run-off election. Since taking office, she has consistently advocated for closer cooperation with the EU and has been a vocal critic of Russian meddling in the region.
The presidential elections in Moldova are scheduled to take place in November or December of 2024, with the exact date to be determined by the parliament. Sandu's candidacy for a second term is expected to be widely supported by her pro-European allies and those who support her vision of a more integrated Moldova.
One of Sandu's primary goals is to further Moldova's integration within the European Union. This vision took a significant step forward earlier this month when Brussels announced the commencement of accession talks with Chisinau. Sandu has been a strong advocate for Moldova's future in the European family and believes that a clear choice must be made by the entire country.
To emphasize the importance of this decision, Sandu has called on the parliament to initiate a referendum in autumn of this year. The referendum would serve as an opportunity for Moldovan citizens to have their voices heard and make a decisive choice regarding the country's path. Sandu believes that the citizens' voices should be the guiding force behind Moldova's future and its alignment with the European Union.
Throughout her presidency, Sandu has not shied away from condemning Russia's actions, particularly its invasion of Ukraine. She has accused Moscow of plotting a coup to overthrow her government, further solidifying her stance against Russian interference in Moldova's affairs.
By declaring her intention to seek a second term, President Sandu aims to build upon the progress made during her first term and continue leading Moldova towards deeper integration with the European Union. Her pro-European agenda and commitment to democratic values resonate with many Moldovans who see a European future as the best path for their country's development and prosperity.
