Tesla Inc. is gearing up to introduce an upgraded version of its popular Model Y electric SUV from its Shanghai plant, as it faces fierce competition from domestic rivals in the Chinese market. Sources familiar with the matter have revealed that Tesla is currently making preparations in China for the refreshed Model Y, and production is expected to commence by mid-2024.

The upcoming 2024 version of the Model Y will reportedly feature significant exterior and interior changes, going beyond the recent minor updates that included a new wheel design and ambient lighting in October. While additional details regarding the specific modifications remain undisclosed, the changes are expected to enhance the overall appeal of the vehicle.

The initial batch of the upgraded Model Y vehicles will be manufactured in the second phase of Tesla's Shanghai facility. During the New Year holiday, the production at the plant will be temporarily suspended for approximately one week to facilitate partial plant upgrades. Further adjustments will be carried out before mass production can begin, according to one of the sources.

Tesla's Shanghai factory, established in 2019, currently produces more than half of the company's global deliveries. The Model Y, introduced in 2020, has been immensely successful and has become one of the bestselling electric vehicle models worldwide. In China specifically, the Model Y accounts for nearly 75% of Tesla's overall sales in the country, highlighting its popularity among Chinese consumers.

Meanwhile, Tesla's competitors in China, both established automakers like BYD Co. and emerging players like Xpeng Inc., are aggressively launching new electric vehicle models to capture a larger market share. BYD, based in Shenzhen, is poised to surpass Tesla as the new global leader in fully electric car sales, potentially within the current quarter.

Earlier this year, Tesla revamped its six-year-old Model 3 sedan with a sleeker design and extended range, aiming to attract more customers. With the upcoming refresh of the Model Y, Tesla aims to maintain its competitive edge and respond to the evolving demands of the Chinese electric vehicle market.

Notably, China's sales of new energy vehicles, including plug-in hybrids and pure-electric cars, witnessed a robust growth of 40% in November compared to the previous year, and an 8.9% increase from October. This data, released by China's Passenger Car Association, points to the burgeoning demand for electric vehicles in the country.

Tesla's move to introduce an upgraded Model Y from its Shanghai factory demonstrates the company's commitment to the Chinese market. By continually innovating and enhancing their vehicle offerings, Tesla aims to retain its loyal customer base and fend off competition from domestic rivals in the dynamic and rapidly expanding Chinese electric vehicle landscape.
