New Zealand's former Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has finally tied the knot with her longtime partner Clarke Gayford in a private ceremony held on Saturday. The couple, who got engaged in May 2019, were originally planning to marry in early 2022. However, their plans had to be postponed due to the strict Covid-19 controls Ardern implemented in the country.
Ardern, renowned for her "go hard, go early" approach to the pandemic, successfully kept the virus-related deaths in New Zealand to a minimum. Throughout her tenure as prime minister from 2017 to January 2021, Ardern became a global symbol for left-leaning politics and women in leadership. She even made history as one of the two women to have a baby while serving as the national leader, taking her daughter to a United Nations meeting.
The wedding ceremony took place at the picturesque Craggy Range Winery in Hawke's Bay, located on the east coast of New Zealand's North Island. The venue, known for its stunning landscapes and renowned vineyards, provided the perfect backdrop for the joyous occasion. Ardern looked radiant in a white halter neck dress, while Gayford donned a classic black suit. Approximately 50 to 75 guests, including Ardern's successor as prime minister, Chris Hipkins, and the current opposition leader, were in attendance to celebrate the couple's special day.
In addition to her political career, Ardern has spent the past six months at Harvard University, undertaking three fellowships. She continues to make a significant impact globally as a trustee of Prince William's Earthshot Prize and as a special envoy for the Christchurch Call, an initiative aimed at combating terrorist and violent extremist content online. Ardern's empathetic response to the Christchurch mosque shootings garnered widespread praise for her compassionate leadership.
In her final speech in parliament, Ardern expressed her desire to finally marry Gayford, saying, "Let's finally get married." The couple's daughter, Neve, who is now five years old, was undoubtedly thrilled to be a part of this momentous occasion.
Jacinda Ardern and Clarke Gayford's wedding marks the beginning of a new chapter for the couple, as they solidify their commitment to each other. Their love story serves as an inspiration, not only for their fellow New Zealanders but for people worldwide who admire their resilience, compassion, and dedication to public service.
