A winter storm is set to sweep across the northeastern United States on Friday, bringing heavy snowfall and potentially causing significant disruptions to the morning commute in New York and Washington. The storm, which follows a recent end to New York City's 701-day snow drought, is expected to dump 2 to 4 inches of snow in the city before daybreak, while Washington may see up to 2 inches, according to the US Weather Prediction Center.
The inclement weather has already prompted Amtrak, the national passenger railroad service, to cancel a number of trains on Thursday due to extreme cold. The bitter chill that set in beforehand has led to the cancellation of over a dozen Acela trains in the Northeast Corridor. This consecutive disruption to train services is likely to cause inconvenience and frustration for commuters.
In addition to the snowfall in New York and Washington, the storm system will also trigger storms on the eastern sides of lakes Michigan, Erie, and Ontario. Buffalo, situated along Lake Erie, is under a lake effect snow warning, with an anticipated additional 8 to 14 inches of snowfall expected in narrow bands. Further north, on the shores of Lake Ontario, an even more substantial 22 inches of snow could accumulate.
However, it's not just the snow-covered roads that will pose challenges for residents. The NHL game on Sunday between the Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs in Orchard Park, New York, is set to take place under cloudy skies and freezing temperatures in the 20s Fahrenheit.
For New York City, the snow is expected to persist throughout Friday and gradually taper off overnight. This means that commuters will likely face treacherous conditions both on their way to work and when heading back home. The storm's path stretches across the central US, resulting in winter weather advisories from Montana to New Jersey and into the lower Mississippi River Valley.
Fortunately, respite from the wintry weather is on the horizon. After the storm passes, a cold blast will initially follow, but a gradual warm-up is forecasted for next week. At the weekend, Central Park is expected to experience a low temperature of 19F under clear skies.
As the storm approaches, it is essential for residents in affected areas to stay informed about any updates or advisories from local authorities. Preparing for potential transportation delays and taking necessary precautions on the roads will be crucial to ensuring the safety and well-being of all commuters and residents during this wintry episode.
