Indian police have finally apprehended Amritpal Singh, a leading ideologue within the outlawed separatist group Waris De Punjab, which seeks to establish a sovereign state called Khalistan for followers of India's minority Sikh religion. Singh's arrest follows an extensive manhunt that began on March 18, when he was accused of attempted murder, obstruction of law enforcement, and creating "disharmony" in society. Singh was arrested in Moga, Punjab, in the northwest of India, and will be taken to a high-security jail in Assam in India's far east.

The hunt for Singh brought renewed attention to the issue of Sikh separatism, with some calling for an independent Sikh homeland in India's Punjab state. This movement was previously involved in a violent insurgency that resulted in thousands of deaths. The manhunt also sparked fears of renewed violence and prompted authorities to block internet access for around 27 million people in Punjab, one of India's most significant blackouts in recent years.

Singh's arrest is a significant development in India's efforts to curb separatist movements and maintain unity within the country. However, it remains to be seen whether this will lead to a resolution of the underlying issues driving the demand for a separate Sikh state. The Indian government will need to address the grievances of the Sikh community and find a way to address their concerns while maintaining the country's territorial integrity.
