Meta Platforms Inc., the parent company of Facebook, has bounced back from a significant slump, reaching a record high in its stock price for the first time in over two years. The shares closed at $383.45, marking a 2% increase and surpassing the previous all-time high set in September 2021.
This achievement comes as a major milestone in the company's recovery journey. At one point, the stock had experienced a steep selloff that had wiped out more than 75% of its value. However, Meta has managed to regain investor confidence and rebuild its market standing. In 2023 alone, its shares nearly tripled, outperforming most other large-cap stocks due to its focus on operational efficiency and cost-cutting measures. Since hitting its low in 2022, the stock has surged by over 300%.
Bernstein analyst Mark Shmulik believes that even after its impressive performance last year, Meta's stock still presents an attractive investment opportunity. Shmulik notes that the company's management has done a remarkable job in reshaping its narrative. Meta is now viewed as a compounding growth company with disciplined operations and achievements in the field of artificial intelligence.
The primary driver of Meta's selloff was concerns surrounding its significant capital expenditure on its metaverse initiative. However, the company's decision to rein in its spending, coupled with a rebound in revenue growth, has led Wall Street to reevaluate its stance on the stock. Furthermore, despite the recent surge in stock price, Meta's valuation remains comparatively modest within the big tech space. It currently trades at approximately 21 times forward earnings, below its 10-year average and the multiple of the Nasdaq 100 Index.
With Meta's successful recovery and the achievement of a new record high, the company appears to be on a positive trajectory. As it continues to demonstrate its focus on operational efficiency while exploring new opportunities in emerging technologies like the metaverse, investors remain optimistic about its future prospects.
