Netflix, Inc. is enjoying a stellar week, as its shares soar on the back of better-than-expected earnings. The streaming giant's stock has surged up to 3.1% in New York trading on Friday, leading to a remarkable weekly gain of 20%, its strongest performance since October 2022. Additionally, Netflix is now trading at its highest level in over two years.
This positive start to the year comes after a turbulent 2023, during which dual strikes in Hollywood negatively impacted Netflix's shares. However, the company rebounded by reporting solid earnings in consecutive quarters, creating optimism among investors. As a result, Netflix is currently the top performer on the S&P 500 Index for the week.
Robert Conzo, CEO of The Wealth Alliance, remarked on the extraordinary growth of Netflix, noting that the company has consistently outperformed expectations and attracted new investors. The recent boost in subscribers in the final quarter of 2023 affirmed that Netflix's price hikes, password crackdown, and advertising-subsidized tier have been successful. Additionally, the company made a major move into live events by acquiring the exclusive rights to Raw and other programming from World Wrestling Entertainment.
Interestingly, while Netflix thrives, its competitors are struggling. Warner Bros. Discovery, Inc. and Paramount Global have each experienced over 6% declines this year, whereas Walt Disney Co. has seen a modest 5% gain, significantly lagging behind Netflix's impressive 19% increase. This trend demonstrates that the industry is rallying around the leading position of Netflix, according to David Klink, a senior equity analyst at Huntington Private Bank.
Analysts have taken notice of Netflix's impressive performance and have adjusted their price targets accordingly. Argus Research Co. and Citigroup Global Markets Inc. have raised their price targets, while Macquarie Group Ltd. and DZ Bank AG upgraded Netflix's stock to a buy-equivalent rating. Macquarie analyst Timothy Nollen expressed his confidence in Netflix, stating, "We have confirmation that Netflix's strategies are paying off," as he raised the price target to $595 from $410.
Although Wall Street analysts generally maintain a bullish stance on Netflix, they anticipate limited upside potential for the stock. While 65% of analysts recommend buying Netflix shares, the average price target is only about 1% higher than the current trading price, according to Bloomberg data. As the company stabilizes its growth, the rally may slow down. Furthermore, Netflix's valuation at 32 times forward earnings is higher than its streaming peers and the overall market. Some investors may pause to assess its future trajectory, noted Robert Conzo.
Nevertheless, investors have recently shown a willingness to pay a premium for companies that exhibit growth, as demonstrated by the success of tech stocks. The Magnificent Seven technology stocks, for example, trade at approximately 28 times forward earnings. Despite concerns about valuation, investors seem undeterred and continue to embrace Netflix's strong performance.
