King Charles, the monarch of Britain, has been diagnosed with a form of cancer, Buckingham Palace confirmed. The 75-year-old king will be postponing his public engagements to focus on undergoing necessary treatment, but remains "wholly positive" in his outlook. Charles, who ascended the throne in September 2022 after the passing of his mother, Queen Elizabeth, has already commenced a series of treatments and is eager to return to his full duties as soon as possible.
The revelation of King Charles' cancer comes after his recent hospitalization for a corrective procedure on a benign enlarged prostate. During his time in the hospital, medical professionals detected another issue of concern, leading to the subsequent diagnosis of cancer. Though no specific details have been disclosed at this stage, Buckingham Palace clarified that the king does not have prostate cancer.
Despite his health challenges, King Charles will continue to carry out state business and official paperwork in the coming period. He will maintain meetings with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, while Queen Camilla will continue her engagements as well. The image of a smiling and waving king attending a church service with Camilla provided no indication of his recent diagnosis. It was his first public appearance since leaving the hospital alongside his daughter-in-law, Kate.
Kate, the Princess of Wales and wife of Prince William, also spent a considerable time in the same London hospital for abdominal surgery related to a non-cancerous condition. She will be taking a break from royal duties until after Easter, with Prince William taking care of their three children during her recovery. Prince William will soon carry out his first public engagement since Kate's operation.
While the royal family generally regards health matters as private, King Charles has chosen to openly share his cancer diagnosis to prevent speculation and foster understanding among those affected by cancer worldwide. Prime Minister Sunak conveyed his best wishes to the king, expressing confidence in his rapid recovery, while President Joe Biden revealed his concern and intention to call Charles later.
The king personally informed his immediate family of his cancer diagnosis. Prince Harry, Charles' younger son, will be traveling to the UK to visit his father in the coming days. Harry currently resides in California with his wife, Meghan, and their two children, after stepping away from royal duties in 2020.
After a remarkable wait to ascend the throne, Charles' first year as king was marked by his coronation, a grand and ceremonious event. While anticipation mounted regarding possible changes to the monarchy due to his long-standing environmental activism, Charles has largely followed the style of his mother, while incorporating some of his own initiatives.
Opinion polls suggest that most Britons have a favorable view of Charles' reign thus far, although younger generations exhibit less enthusiasm towards the royal family in general. Prior to his recent health issues, the ongoing rift within the royal family, particularly between Harry and his older brother, Prince William, cast a shadow over their public image.
Ingrid Seward, Editor in Chief of Majesty Magazine, noted that Charles, known for his workaholic nature with late-night work sessions, will have to adopt a slower pace following his health concerns. Seward emphasized that his body, as well as his wife Camilla, will remind him of the need for a more relaxed approach. She also mentioned that Charles has experienced mental exhaustion since the passing of the queen, as he has been involved in non-stop activities since then.
While Queen Margrethe II of Denmark recently abdicated in favor of her son, King Frederik X, after a 52-year reign, Seward firmly believes that Charles will not follow suit. She stated, "Absolutely not, 100% no."
