Georgian lawmakers have given their approval to Irakli Kobakhidze as the new prime minister of Georgia. This move comes ahead of the parliamentary elections scheduled for October in the European Union candidate nation. Kobakhidze takes the helm from former Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, who willingly stepped down to allow other members of the ruling Georgian Dream party to have a chance at leading the government. Garibashvili, in turn, will assume the role of chairman of billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili's ruling party.
The confirmation of Irakli Kobakhidze as prime minister came with the support of 84 out of the 150 deputies in the parliament in Tbilisi. The only change in the cabinet, so far, has been the endorsement of Irakli Chikovani as the new defense minister.
The upcoming parliamentary elections are of significant importance for Georgia's political landscape. The government has faced criticism in recent times. It is alleged that their initial attempt to pass a "foreign agents" law was akin to one implemented by Russian President Vladimir Putin to suppress dissent. Subsequently, there were accusations of Georgia failing to provide adequate support to Ukraine in the aftermath of the Kremlin's invasion in February 2022.
With a new prime minister in place, Georgia seeks to address these concerns and regain public confidence ahead of the forthcoming elections. The ruling party will have the opportunity to present their vision for the future to the voters and compete for their support. The changes in leadership within the government and ruling party indicate a commitment to promoting stability and a smooth democratic transition of power.
The role of prime minister holds immense responsibility in guiding the country's development and maintaining its relations with global partners. The actions and decisions made by the new prime minister will greatly impact Georgia's standing in the international community and its aspirations to join the European Union. As the elections draw closer, it remains to be seen how the political landscape will evolve and how the new leadership will navigate the challenges that lie ahead.
