Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) has announced limited-time discounts on certain Model Y vehicles in the U.S., following a recent reduction in prices for the same model in Germany. The electric car manufacturer has lowered the prices of its Model Y rear-wheel drive and Model Y Long Range by $1,000, making them available for $42,990 and $47,990 respectively. This represents a discount of 2.3% and 2% from their previous prices. However, prices for the Model Y Performance variant and other models remain unaffected.
The reduced prices will apply to deliveries of the new Model Y rear-wheel drive and Long Range models from now until February 29. Tesla has also stated that the prices will increase by $1,000 or more starting from March 1. The recent price adjustments come as Tesla continues to face challenges in its production processes and supply chain due to various disruptions caused by factors such as shipping delays.
Tesla's decision to lower prices in Germany last month was prompted by the suspension of car production at its Berlin factory, mainly due to a shortage of components resulting from attacks in the Red Sea region. In addition, the company had previously warned of slower sales growth this year, as it shifts its focus towards the production of its next-generation electric vehicle, codenamed "Redwood." These recent price cuts are expected to put further pressure on Tesla's margins, which have already been impacted by an ongoing price war in the electric vehicle market.
Furthermore, Tesla is also preparing for a potential decrease in demand and increased competition, as more affordable electric vehicle options become readily available. Chinese automaker BYD (002594.SZ) surpassed Tesla as the world's top electric vehicle manufacturer in the final quarter of 2023, signaling the growing competition in the market. Additionally, rental firm Hertz Global Holdings (HTZ.O) recently announced its decision to sell around 20,000 electric vehicles, including Teslas, from its U.S. fleet due to higher costs associated with repairs and damages for electric vehicles compared to gas-powered vehicles.
The announcement of limited-time discounts on select Model Y vehicles demonstrates Tesla's proactive approach to adapt to market conditions and stimulate sales. However, these price cuts come amidst a challenging landscape for Tesla, with growing competition and potential disruptions in the supply chain. As a result, Tesla's shares have experienced a decline of 22.1% since the beginning of this year.
