As winter begins to wane its icy grip, signs of an early spring are already emerging across the United States. The National Phenology Network reports that the West Coast and South have started to green out sooner than usual, with plants blooming along the Gulf Coast. This trend is attributed to large-scale weather patterns favoring spring-like conditions, as noted in a medium-range forecast by Atmospheric G2.

Looking ahead, the forecast from Commodity Weather Group LLC predicts milder-than-normal temperatures for various regions of North America. The central and eastern US, along with eastern Canada, can expect temperatures 8F to 15F degrees above average through March 11. This warmth will be especially pronounced around the Great Lakes, upstate New York, and northern New England, as well as in parts of Ontario and Quebec.

This warm weather trend is expected to persist in the longer term, with forecasts indicating above-average temperatures through March 26. However, amidst the unseasonable warmth, red flag fire warnings have been issued across the Great Plains and Midwest. The combination of dry vegetation and strong winds poses an increased risk of wildfires spreading rapidly in the region.

Gusts exceeding 60 miles per hour are anticipated in areas stretching from West Texas to South Dakota and extending eastward towards Chicago. Particularly critical conditions are forecasted for West Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Colorado, and Kansas, leading the US Storm Prediction Center to issue these red flag warnings. As the winds sweep dry regions, the threat of wildfire outbreaks looms large, underscoring the delicate balance between the early stirrings of spring and the lingering hazards of a parched landscape.
